Google Pay Android App Surpasses 100 Million Global Installs

The recently rebranded Google Pay Android app surpassed 100 million global installs, as revealed by its newly updated Google Play Store listing. The Mountain View, California-based tech giant has been rolling out the new branding to users since late February and the app has apparently continued gaining traction in the meantime, with the service also being pre-installed on many smartphones released in recent times, including the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

As of today, every active Android Pay app in the world should have already been rebranded to Google Pay, though some functionalities of the tool remain limited. E.g. peer-to-peer payments are still not supported and are only planned to be introduced to consumers in the United States and the United Kingdom later this spring. Alphabet’s subsidiary never clarified why it pulled the trigger on a unified new brand meant to bring Google Wallet and Android Pay features together before being able to offer all of their functionalities through a single app, with the company previously only promising to keep users regularly updated about new additions to Google Pay.

The latest version of the Android app has a personalized home screen with a list of nearby stores that accept Google’s mobile payments solution and another section dedicated to your purchase history and tips for using the service. The firm is still in the process of pushing its platform to more product retailers and service providers, with the latest addition to its ecosystem being the Las Vegas Monorail. As of late March, Google Pay is offering a new referral program that provides users with $10 for every referrer and also nets the same amount of credit to their referrals. The initiative isn’t available in all countries supported by the platform but may expand its availability in the near future. Google is likely to talk about its mobile payments solution at the upcoming iteration of its annual Google I/O developer conference scheduled to start on May 8.
